John Denver

Born Henry John Deutschendorf, John Denver was a legendary American singer, songwriter and poet. Hailed as one of the all time music greats, Denver became the most popular acoustic artist during 1970s when he released 300 songs and recorded the maximum sale. He was conferred on with the title of poet laureate of Colorado in 1977. Some of his songs such as; "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", "Sunshine on My Shoulders", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", "Annie's Song" and "Calypso" achieved cult status becoming popular across the length and breadth of the world.

Early life

Denver was born in Roswell, New Mexico on December 31, 1943. He father was an air force officer and flight instructor of German ancestry. His mother was of Irish origin. Music was introduced to Denver by his parents in his early age.

Denver began to play guitar when he was in college. Soon, he joined local clubs too and adopted the name Denver after the capital of his favorite state Colarado. He sang for a folk music group called "The Alpine Trio" when he was at Texas technological college in Lubbock.

Rise to fame

Denver decided to pursue solo career in 1969 and released his first album called Rhymes and Reasons in the same year. Prior to this he had made a self produced demo recording of some of the songs he played at his concerts. One of these songs entitled "Leaving on a jet plane" went on to become number one on Billboard hot 100.



In 1970Denver released two more albums "Take Me to Tomorrow and Whose Garden Was This." Although these albums didn’t commercially succeed, they established Denver as a popular singer.

Denver’s first major successful album was "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" that was released in 1971. Two of the singles from this album namely country roads and take me home went on to break all previous record of sales and Denver was catapulted into a household name across the world.

Denver was killed in a plane crash in 1997 near Pacific Ocean.
